España, mi amor

Many apologies for the long wait!! It has now been 26 days since I arrived here, in my little town of Canet de Mar.

Before I arrived at my final destination, I made a short detour in Paris for 5 days. Why? Why not!!

The Eiffel Tour, dressed up like the EU flag bc at the moment, its their turn at presidentship. (is that a word?)

My favorite tree in Paris.

I met up with Lauren and her padres, and we had a great time being tourists. Since I´ve already done just about all the touristy things to do, I wanted to just spend this trip walking around the city and taking it all in. Armed with a great list of "favorite things to do in paris" by Sara Tan and her friends (who spent six months living in Paris), I hit up local spots for amazing almond croissants, delicious falafels, and great places to sit and read a book.

Mmmmmm!! Falafel!!

There was a long ass line out the door of this place, but its well worth it. And as i was walking down the street eating, a guy said "bon apetite!". I love it!

So then i finally arrived here:

This is the view of almost the whole town. There are only about 12,000 people that live here, and I´m pretty sure they all know who I am already.

And here are some pictures of the beach:

I "work" 12 hours a week-maximum- and help the 4 English teachers at the school with whatever they want really. I teach in all of the grade levels, from P-5 (which are 5 yr olds) to 6th grade. Im supposed to have one day a week off, so i alternate between having Monday or Friday off. Im not allowed to ever be alone with the kids, and Im not allowed to grade them on anything. Im sort of just an assistant...that gets paid well.

I´ve started giving private English lessons to some students, mostly ones in high school. I just told the English teachers that i work with to spread the word, and a few days later i got a whole bunch of calls. I have 7 students right now, and i work with them for an hour a week, some of them twice a week. I only see them in the afternoons, and never on fridays, saturdays, or sundays. A little money under the table....always good!

My first week here I lived with the main English teacher at the school, Teresa, because I wasnt sure about my housing. At the time I had two different apartment options, but I wanted to see the places first before accepting either one.

I didnt really like either of them...so i spent that first week looking for places. A friend of Teresas called her one night and told here about a friend who was moving from Canet to Barcelona and wanted to rent out her place here, and the following day i went to see her.

It all worked out, and her apartment is great. Its like im only renting a room from her, but since shes living in Barce now, i have the place to myself. Its a three bedroom apt, and i have a queen size bed (yay!!) and my own bathroom...well i suppose i can use both bathrooms if i really wanted to. Theres also a huge terrace outside, from which i can see the ocean. Just about everyone here has a view of the ocean, though. Its like IV, only theres lots of hills, and not as many parties. And when i wake up in the morning and walk outside, i dont smell stale beer, i smell fresh bread :)

So i have a resident ID card now, and the woman at the police station where i got it was really nice to me. Im really only supposeed to be allowed to stay in the country until my program ends (May 31st) but i told her i wanted to stay longer, and at first she said i could stay until July, and in the end she told me that I could stay until Sept. 26th. We´ll see if i stay that long, but i have a feeling im going to want to stay for the whole summer.

I´ll take some pictures of my apartment soon, and also of the school where i work. Expect that for my next post!

Adeu!
